Getting started with Ledger
A hardware wallet helps you keep control of your crypto by keeping your private keys offline. Getting set up is simple. Follow these steps, take your time, and keep your recovery phrase private.
Before you begin
Use a device purchased from Ledger or an authorized retailer. Ledger will never ask for your recovery phrase—online, by email, or over the phone.
Install Ledger Wallet
Ledger Wallet is the companion app for managing your device and crypto. Download it directly from the official Ledger website or your device’s official app store. Avoid search ads and third-party download sites.
Set up your Ledger device
Connect or turn on your device and follow the instructions displayed on its screen. You’ll choose a PIN code and create a new wallet. Confirm each step on the device itself—your computer or phone screen alone is not enough.
- Choose a PIN that’s difficult to guess.
- Verify prompts directly on your Ledger device.
Protect your recovery phrase
Your device will generate a 24-word recovery phrase. It is the backup to your wallet, and anyone who has it can access your assets. Write it down on the recovery sheet provided and store it somewhere private and secure.
Never digitize your phrase. Don’t photograph it, type it into a computer or phone, save it in cloud storage, or share it with anyone. Ledger Support will never ask you for it.
You’re ready to go
Once your device is set up, you can add accounts and explore supported assets in Ledger Wallet. Always verify transaction details on your device before approving. If something doesn’t look right, reject the transaction and pause.
